Fair Chanukah Fayre - Sunday 27 October 2013

Sunday 27th October 2013

Chanukah is the Jewish Festival of Lights.  It is a time of giving but carries a message of sustainability - the story of a tiny amount of oil lasting eight days celebrates a simple miracle of resource conservation! Chanukah also represents the victory of an idealistic and courageous minority over the seemingly invincible power and dominant values of the surrounding society, an inspiration for anyone campaigning for large-scale social change.

The ‘Fair Chanukah Fayre’ will present the first and only dedicated ethical marketplace for sourcing Chanukah gifts. Products on offer will be produced and sourced in sustainable ways (natural, renewable, recycled, upcycled) and/or fairtrade (where appropriate). Beautiful and unusual gifts which can't be found on the high street include jewellery, homeware, clothing, toys and games, beauty and skincare.

The marketplace will be supported by presentations from speakers, entertainers and workshops to make it as informative and discursive as possible – within the rabbinical tradition of challenge and debate. Whilst it is aimed at the Jewish community and will seek to align broader messages of sustainability within a Jewish idiom, it is definitely open to the full cross-section of that community, from secular to orthodox, and is not limited by a religious identity or language.
